Collinsville Senior Center offers free tax services : Sj
As an airline pilot, Collinsville resident Paul Parkinson was off to steer a plane from St. Louis to Dallas last week. But first, he had to meet with retiree Rosa Vogt at the Collinsville Senior Center before she started her line dancing session.
Parkinson is a volunteer tax preparer for the AARP and Vogt was one of a handful of people waiting in line to get their state and federal taxes done free of charge authentic jordan shoes for sale. Parkinson, who has been volunteering for the AARP for seven years, said people are not required to provide any documentation to receive the services.

Vogt, a grandmother and retired seamstress, knows she qualifies due to both age and income guidelines. She said she had been paying a friend to prepare her taxes in prior years but discovered the service at the Senior Center when she stopped by to line dance last year.
“I think it's wonderful for the AARP to take care of us because otherwise it would cost me a lot of money,Vogt said. “And they do very well, they are very efficient.,/p>
Parkinson said AARP volunteer tax prepares are required to take an Internal Revenue Service three-day training session each year. Once they complete the training, they become certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistants or VITAs. The divorced father of three said he spends about 12 hours a week doing the volunteer work and got involved because he wanted to help others and gain something for himself.

Collinsville Senior Center Director Al Artimisi said the center has been holding the free sessions for the last three years. He said Collinsville Township Supervisor Terry “Bones,Allan brought the opportunity to the center and he felt like it was a good fit for the seniors who use the facility.
“I think they love it,Artimisi said of the seniors who use the service.
Parkinson said hard copies of the electronic filings are given to the customers and the tax assistants do not keep records of the returns they prepare. He said filing just one W-2 takes about 20 minutes and an average tax preparation takes 45 minutes to an hour. The wait to get taxes done may be a little longer. Recently, there were about 15 names on the sign-up sheet at 10 a.m.
That was okay for Roy Milam, who was about half-way down the list. He and a buddy were playing billiards at the senior center while they waited.
“It's a good deal,Milam said of the free tax service. “And you can't beat the wait.,/p>
