On Sunday afternoon, Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan finally won his first Indianapolis 500 after 12 attempts and poured a bottle of milk over his head, even getting some in his mouth.
Kanaan,s racing career and life is steeped in Indy 500 lore. It was the one race he wanted more than any other.
He had finished third in 2003, second in 2004, fifth in 2006, fourth in 2011 and third last year.
Kanaan, 38, dreamed of his name and face being on the Borg-Warner Trophy and was prepared to risk everything to win the ,Greatest Spectacle in Racing.,
On Sunday, he drove with a busted-up left thumb, using one hand at times to negotiate the 2.5-mile speedway. He would have steered with his rather large nose if that would have gotten the job done.
Later this week Kanaan will arrive in the Motor City for the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, which he won in 2008. He will drive for KV Racing Technology and he will give it all he has, because he knows no other way.
Kanaan is a driver,s driver who cherishes the great names of Indianapolis , the likes of A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears, Al Unser Sr. and Parnelli Jones. His opposition respects him, his fans love him. He is a generous man with his time and advice and a leader on race teams.
He also has a big, big heart and people know it.
Italian racer Alex Zanardi, a close friend of Kanaan,s, was at Indy on Sunday to root on Tony.
Zanardi lost his legs in a CART race accident in Germany in 2001. In 2012 he competed in the Paralympics in London and won two gold medals in hand biking. He gave one to Kanaan to rub before the race for good luck in his motor coach.

Nine years ago, he made a visit to a hospital in Indianapolis to see a young girl who was seriously ill.
,When I walked in to (her room), there was this girl, Kanaan recalled Sunday. ,She was 14 years old. She had had a stroke and was in a coma. She was going to have surgery next morning.,
Kanaan left her a necklace his mother had given him to keep him safe.
,My mother tells me to race slow, which is kind of stupid, Kanaan said in jest.
The girl, who is now 23, survived the operation and four days ago returned the necklace to Kanaan.
,She said that she had enough of luck in her life, Kanaan said. ,She got married and she wanted to give it back to me to bring me luck. So, here it
