I have a single, solid black graphic. How do I make the background transparent?

And where are you intended to use it, on web page, in Word document or anywhere else?

I'll use it on a web page and also in printed materials (brochures, etc).

You can convert it to GIF or PNG file. These 2 formats support transparent background and both are very popular.
But for that you need any advanced of specific software. Maybe you have Adobe Photoshop?..
