As the AFL season looms we look at 10 of the greatest rivalries throughout the land
The kick-off to the 2013 AFL season is creeping up on us and as we countdown to the first game on March 22, foxsports.com.au is getting you into debate mood.
1.Hawthorn v Geelong
What can you say about this clash that hasnt already been said, In 12 clashes since 2007, the AVERAGE margin of this fixture is a mere five points which is extraordinary across a six-season span. In that time, the Hawks have won just twice and their last was the memorable 2008 grand final. These two never fail to deliver.
Which of these AFL rivalries is best,
2.Fremantle v West Coast
The western derby has gone from strength to strength in recent years as both sides find themselves in the best shape of their relatively short histories. Not only is the derby a fearsome and enthralling contest played to a packed house at Subiaco, but the ramifications of the result in the current era can make the difference come September. With the likes of Pavlich, Fyfe, Sandilands, Hill jordan cool grey 9, LeCras, Cox, Naitanui and Priddis locking horns, has there ever been a better time to watch West Australian footy,
3.Carlton v Essendon

Despite winning just one combined flag since the turn of the century, there is never any love lost between the Blues and the Bombers. Two proud clubs arent afraid to beat their chests, even in leaner periods. The fact they are deadlocked on 16 flags C the most in the AFL C makes the race to the summit of number 17 all the more entertaining.
4.Collingwood v Essendon - ANZAC Day
Since the inception of this fixture in 1995, the ANZAC Day clash has grown in stature to one of the most anticipated matches on the AFL calendar. Regardless of form or what logic says should occur, this match rarely fails to disappoint with a third of the matches decided by two kicks or less. Its always a big occasion when these traditional rivals meet at the MCG, but it always rises to another level on April 25.
5.Collingwood v Mick Malthouse (Carlton)
No hype needs to be generated with the Pies face the Blues. Its a rivalry as old as the game itself. But in 2013, unprecedented spice will be added to the fixture with Mick Malthouse coaching against the side he led for 12 years buy jordan 4, including winning an elusive premiership in 2010. Very rarely in world sport do players and personnel cross over to their fiercest of rivals C particularly coaches with intimate knowledge of the list. Lock Sunday April 7 into your calendar as non-negotiable viewing!
6 jordan 12 playoff.Carlton v Richmond
There is no love lost between these traditional foes. Although neither has tasted the ultimate success for several decades, it's usually a great spectacle when they clash. So much so that the AFL has pitted the Blues and Tigers against each other in round one for the past seven years. And with both teams appearing to be on the rise, the stakes will only grow in 2013 and beyond.
7.Essendon v Hawthorn
After a venom-filled 80s jordan 13 flint, the Essendon Hawthorn rivalry continued with gusto throughout the ensuing decades. It doesnt seem to matter who is playing or how the teams are faring. These teams just plain hate each other, evidenced by the now infamous line in the sand match in 2004 that resulted in a raft of suspensions and a record $70,700 in fines stemming from a third-quarter brawl.
8.Gold Coast v Greater Western Sydney
While not necessarily displaying the glitz, glamour and history of other match-ups, these new boys are rapidly developing a rivalry borne from youth development. As the latest projects of expansion, the Suns and Giants are still finding their feet at this level and comparisons will naturally be drawn between the two as they navigate their formative seasons in the AFL. With one win apiece, the stage is set for years of close tussles and burgeoning superstars.
9.Adelaide v Port Adelaide
Although the lustre has worn off this rivalry in recent years, the Showdown is still one of the most physical and spiteful games on the AFL fixture. The average margin across the past eight meetings dating back to 2009 has been a whopping 35 points, but its a game you will always watch regardless of form, personnel or consequence of the outcome.
10.Adelaide v Sydney
Although not necessarily a traditional rivalry, this clash will have added spice in forthcoming editions due to the controversial Kurt Tippett defection. The Crows won last years first clash by five points at the SCG but it was the eventual premiers who had the last laugh with a 29-point qualifying final triumph in Adelaide.
