Report: Lions in mix for free agent safety Dashon Goldson | Detroit Free Press | freep.com
Suddenly, the Lions have the potential to be one of the biggest players in free agency, though it,s not quite clear how they could get there.
Long acknowledged to be one of the most aggressive pursuers of running back Reggie Bush, the Lions are one of four teams in the mix to land the top safety on the market, Dashon Goldson, according to ESPN.
Goldson is expected to command somewhere around $8 million per year, a number that was considered too high for the Lions despite their glaring need at the position.
The Lions are about $5 million under the salary cap after tendering a contract offer to restricted free agent Jason Fox on Monday and would have to extend quarterback Matthew Stafford,s contract or restructure the deals of some other players to land Goldson.
The 49ers, Eagles and Buccaneers also are in contention for Goldson, according to ESPN,arnette sunglasses.
NFL.com also reported late tonight that the Lions are creating ,a lot of buzz, over their interest in Texans safety Glover Quin.
Goldson intercepted nine passes over the last two seasons with two Pro Bowl appearances and helped lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl last year.
The Lions are looking for safety help after starters Louis Delmas and Amari Spievey missed most of last year with injuries. Neither player is currently under contract for 2013.
